Outdoor Christmas Lighting | Outdoor Christmas Lighting Ideas

Outdoor Christmas Lighting | Outdoor Christmas Lighting Ideas

What’s Christmastime without a bit of decorative lighting sprinkled everywhere? Ah, the houses have to be bright enough for Santa Claus to maneuver his sleigh in the nighttime sky to the right houses and shove himself into the chimney, all laden with gifts! But, keeping Santa aside, the lights bring on a festive charm like nothing else can. Outdoor Christmas lights proclaim to all passers-by that you are celebrating the joy of the season. Your lights must definitely match this feeling of joy.Christmas lights come in several different forms, and you will really be confounded if you visit a store selling these lights. There are the basic round colored bulbs that have been used traditionally, but then there are many fancy shapes available nowadays. This year’s favorites seem to be the pearly bulbs, which are actually shaped round like pearls and given a glossy sheen on their outward surface to make them seem more so. Heart shaped bulbs are still present, and you will also find more thematic Christmas lights such as those shaped in the form of icicles, candies, and even holly and mistletoe! Now you have to select how much length of bulb strings you will require. Do not be a Scrooge about buying these bulb strings, especially since you are going to light up the entire exterior of your house, which includes the bushes and the brambles. Bulb strings are nonperishable, so you can stock them in your loft or attic and use them the next year too. You may even experiment with the same bulbs to give a wholly different look to the decoration. Anyways, you will be requiring adequate length to at least cover the front side of your house twice over. Add a few feet of bulb string to cover up for those unavoidable folds and knots you might have to make. If you are dressing up the bushes with outdoor Christmas lights too, then take good-sized length, because bushes have an undesirable habit of camouflaging most of the decorative lights. You can also get cute little lights for your crib. These are the LED Christmas lights, and they come in several different colors. A favorite is to line up the surface of the crib table with a string of LED Christmas lights. You can even add a router to the string to make these lights blink on and off. LED Christmas lights can also be put on the barks of your outdoor trees and can be lined around your flowerpots outside the house. You will, of course, need a wireman to put up the electric points for you outside the house. You can do the setting up of the light strings yourself later on (that’s the creative part anyways), but let the wireman pull out a line from inside the house and provide you with the connection. This is necessary, or you might have to spend Christmastime with a hairstyle resembling that of a freshly plucked turkey. The best part is putting up the lights. You can have a whole family thing here, with each one contributing in their way. Even the kiddies can help in handing out stuff when you are perched atop the stool to put up the lights. One of the most traditional ways is to run the light string along the edges of the house, but no one says you cannot experiment. You can use the LED Christmas lights to write out small messages like ‘Season’s Greetings’ on an outdoor wall of the house. If you have a fence, try getting the new fashion pipe Christmas lights to work on the top portion of the fence. Pipe lights work wonders with picket fences. The Christmas tree holds center stage for the week leading up to Christmas and the week after it. A lot of effort and resources is expended in procuring just the right tree for your house. But the irony is that not many people know of the history behind the tree and its origins. The individual responsible for the Christmas tree was Queen Charlotte, the German-born wife of George III, the “Mad King”. On Christmas Day 1800, she held a party for the children of Windsor, the centerpiece of which was Britain’s first recorded Christmas tree, a yew decorated with sweetmeats, toys and candles. But it became something that seemed like it was the prerogative of only the Royals. It was Prince Albert who turned them into a national one by propagating it thorough the national newspaper.Decorations for the Christmas tree have evolved over the years. Initially the idea was to fill it with all kinds of ornaments and colorful items. Then came the lights. Ostentationism was well entrenched in the Christmas tree culture. Nowadays Christmas trees are used to depict a certain aspect of your life i.e. hobbies, moods, frame of mind etc. It denotes something that is positive and full of hope. A wedding or baby theme can reflect the events of the past year or the year ahead. Current interests, activities and family events can be a source of themes that will add to family memories when viewed in the photo albums in the future. The arrival of a baby can be a theme.A step – by – step approach is required when decorating the Christmas tree. The most important step is to decide on the type of tree itself. The tree is usually chosen after the buyer looks at the number of branches and the way that they are shaped. He has to feel good about the tree at the outset. If each layer of branch has a staggered appearance, the process of decoration is expedited. Most trees with a fresh cut will drink many quarts of water in the first few hours, so check the water level in your tree stand several times a day.A Wilt resistant spray that can be applied to trees before bringing them indoors that claims to keep needles fresh for several weeks. Before getting down to the task of decorating the tree it is advisable to decide on the kind of effect that needs to be achieved. Ideally two sets of lights can be used. The shorter set will spiral around the trunk of the tree from top to bottom, while the longer version will spiral around the branches. The color scheme must ensure that the tree has a minimalist but grand look to it. It would be ideal if a two color scheme was employed. It could be a green, choice between green, gold, purple and red. Place the main color on the tips of the branches and the secondary color deeper into the tree, giving depth to the display. However if the minimalist look is to be eschewed, then many ornaments can be used. At least dozen “filler” ornaments for every 2 feet of tree can be used. These can be inexpensive glass balls readily available at discount stores. There is no point decorating the back of the tree, as it will not be visible in any case. Strands of beads can be looped over the ends of the branches. If the beads have a glossy finish, it would be great as it would reflect the light all over the room. Finally at the top of the tree, the most important ornament must be added. This is something that symbolizes the spirit of Christmas, so it must be unique as well as elegant. Stars and angels have been some of the popular choices in the past. Now that the tree is made, there arises the problem of the tree stand. If the tree stand is visible it could spoil the entire display and take away the magic of the moment. It is imperative that the stand remains covered at all times.

Techniques on Installing Outdoor Christmas Lighting

Techniques on Installing Outdoor Christmas Lighting

There’s something about outdoor Christmas decorations that can just spark the mood for the holiday cheer. A home seem lifeless and without joy without Christmas lights. If you’re looking for the best kind of outdoor Christmas decoration, then you should try looking for outdoor Christmas lighting. Here are some great tips in shopping for and installing lights outdoors.

Price Does Matter

Fire incidents have happened due to cheap but faulty Christmas lightings. You can avoid getting these sub standard products by choosing local government standard approved products instead of dubious imported or online auction lights. Standard outdoor Christmas lighting may be a little more expensive but you should rather spend than risk burning down your property.

If you discounted outdoor Christmas lighting, buy from reputable brand names and during the off season. Buy months ahead of Christmas or days after Christmas for next season. This can help you save a bit while at the same time nit sacrificing quality.

Decide on the Kind of Lights

Christmas decorations and lightings can be in C9 or miniature. Lights that are under C9 are often seen as better options for outdoor lighting. These lights are not only bigger, they are also sturdier and emit brighter lights.

Check the Lights

Before you install outdoor Christmas lighting, make sure that the strings that you use are still in perfect working order. Plug the strings and check for bulbs that no longer light. You can easily replace bulbs by unplugging the strings and replacing the old one with a new one. Aside from checking bulbs, you should also check the wires. Finding frayed or exposed wires means that it is time to for you to buy new lights. Checking for frays is especially important if you think you have mice at home.

Provide Outlets

Outdoor Christmas lighting would usually require you several extension cords. Sometimes though, they may not be the safest especially if the extension is connected to an internal socket. This could be a cause of short circuits. Extension cords that are improperly used and connected could also cause electrocution.

If there is a need to use extensions, make sure that the ones you will be using are sturdy and safe for outdoor use. You should also have outdoor receptacles or outlets from which you can plug extensions for outdoor Christmas lighting. These receptacles should be controlled by internal switches so that you do not have to pull the plug yourself. Also, remember to have a ground fault circuit interrupter that can prevent electrocution especially on wet areas. Extensions wires for outdoor Christmas lighting should be firmly attached to the ground with the extra length of wires clipped and kept in a neat bunch. This is to prevent accidental tripping.

Take Care of Connectors

Connectors are sometimes unavoidable if one outdoor Christmas lighting string is not enough for a specific area. You should make sure though that your connectors are not too exposed and are kept away from wet areas. You can put electrical tape around the connecting line for extra precaution.

Prelit Artificial Christmas Tree: The Season For Colors

Prelit Artificial Christmas Tree: The Season For Colors

There’s something to be said about the traditional Christmas tree. Finding one usually require a mini-ritual when the holidays come around. For those who live in the cities, we accompany our parents to the Christmas tree lot and pick that one tree that we will use for that season. The lucky ones get to go in the forest somewhere and chop up a tree instead of buying one.

Well, just like anything else, there are issues with always using traditional trees. For one, not everybody has a truck car to haul these trees. Not to mention that we could be in the middle of a financial crunch that holiday season, so having to buy a Christmas tree can strain the pocket.

Additionally, there are times when a traditional tree simply does not capture the season for us. Lo and behold comes a product of western ingenuity, the artificial Christmas tree. These manufactured wonders can really come to the rescue. They are creative and flexible at the same time. Think of it as the “ace in the hole”. If you have an artificial Christmas tree in storage, you can never have a stressful time hunting for a tree at the last minute if you choose not to. As many of us have experienced in the past, last minute Christmas crowd can be very discouraging. Lastly, if you own a prelit artificial christmas tree, you won’t have to go without a tree during any Christmas season simply because money is tight. Just pull the tree out of storage and you’re good to go.

STYLING WITH A PRELIT ARTIFICIAL CHRISTMAS TREE

What’s great about artificial Christmas trees is the creativity behind various designs. Artificial Christmas trees can give you traditional or non-traditional look. It can be sized for tabletops or as tall as a living room. And also, it can come in a color you haven’t even thought of for a tree. Let’s look at a few popular styles:

PINK ARTIFICIAL CHRISTMAS TREES

This one has been very popular. A pink artificial Christmas tree is something I would never even thought of, but perhaps if you have a little girl in your life, daughter or granddaughter, it will make sense. Girls like anything pink. That’s a given. A pink Christmas tree will be a tough to decorate for many of us. But encourage the girls to do so, and they’ll more than satisfy you. Just think, decorating a pink artificial Christmas tree can become a yearly family event for your little princess throughout the years as she grows up.

RED ARTIFICIAL CHRISTMAS TREES

Red is a Christmas color. Why isn’t it a Christmas tree color? The simple answer is that trees are not red. And that’s another reason for buying an artificial Christmas tree. You can have any color including red. The color red draws attention. But a red Christmas tree demands attention. Anytime a guest walks into your family room, a red artificial christmas tree will greet them with cheerful tidngs.

ARTIFICIAL FIR CHRISTMAS TREE

Ever ask why the traditional Christmas tree is a triangle shape with green color? It comes from the fir tree that cropped up from a fallen oak that St. Boniface cleaved to convert German pagans to Christianity. The fir tree had a triangle shape symbolizing the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) with evergreen leaves that stay green through different seasons and represent eternal life.

Accordingly, among the artificial Christmas trees, one of the more popular type is the artificial fir Christmas tree. From within the fir tree type, there are subselections as well, such as Fraser, Noble, Camdon, Everbrite, Carolina, Montana, Spruce, and Pine Cone. These trees are so realistic that they’re visually tough to distinguish from real trees.

SAFETY CONCERNS

One last note on artificial Christmas trees, over the past years, American families are choosing artifical Christmas trees over real trees. If you have any concern of their use, then you’ll be glad to know that today’s artificial trees are made with flame-resistant materials. This bit of information is helpful since Christmas trees are often decorated with electrical accessories such as Christmas lights. Prelit artificial Christmas trees are among the most popular type out there.

Rope Lights at Christmas

Rope Lights at Christmas

Rope lights can be a very festive decoration at Christmas time. Rope lights are safer that the mini string lights because their lights are inside a tube and protected from the winter weather and less easy to break.

The tubing that surrounds these lights is very flexible so you will be able to follow the shape of your house. You can also be very imaginative and create your own designs and shapes with rope lights. Running them down the sides of your driveway or as landscape path lights will let those who come for visits know where to park and walk for safety. Another possibility would be to mount them on stakes and outline your front yard landscaping. For indoor use they can be used to decorate any large houseplant, your Christmas tree or brighten up a corner of a room.

Light-emitting diode or LED rope lights are now available for conserving energy. These lights are very tiny bulbs with no filament and this is the reason they are able to use less energy; they also do not get very hot and will last longer than the regular bulbs. The LED lights will burn brighter; they are made of heavy plastic and are very long lasting. They can also last up to 100,000 hours and you can string up to about 600 feet together.

Because these outdoor rope lights are encased in tubing you can create numerous shapes. Some of the festive shapes you can create are: stockings, bells, candy canes, trees, stars, animals, or a simple holiday greeting. Mounting clips are available for rope lights for the ease of mounting on different surfaces such as a fence or on a frame to stand on your front landscaping. These rope lights can be purchased in many different colors including multi-colored and clear. If you purchase Christmas rope lights that are classified as chasers you can place them on Christmas decorations that have wheels and it will give the impression that the decoration is moving. They can also be wrapped around trees, bushes and hedges, or around a flag pole.

Solar rope lights are a very good choice for landscape rope lighting as they do not need electricity, just the sun as their energy source. They can be used when it is rainy, overcast, or while it is snowing because of their polycrystalline cells. These solar cells are capable of capturing enough energy during dispursed sunlight or a small amount of daylight during the winter months to perform.

Your backyard garden is also an excellent place for holiday rope lights. Deck rope lighting can be placed along the railings of your deck or along the edge of your deck flooring. They can also be mounted on your landscape fencing to highlight your entire backyard landscaping. Rope lights mounted on stakes used as landscape path lights are a great way to see around the garden. Using rope lights at Christmas and any time during the year is an innovative way of lighting up your garden and landscaping.

Barbara is retired and enjoys the time tinkering in the garden. She has been using rope lights for a number of years in the garden. Visit the website Gardeners Garden Supplies for more interesting things about gardening.

Choosing and Caring for a Georgia-grown Christmas Tree

Choosing and Caring for a Georgia-grown Christmas Tree

Choosing and Caring for your Tree. Choosing a real Christmas tree is a fun outing for the whole family and easy to do. At Lovell Tree Farm, we would like to offer a few simple steps for selecting the perfect tree.

In most households, the holiday season didn’t begin until the family went to the local lot or tree farm to pick out their tree. Then, the whole family would decorate the tree. Gifts would be wrapped and placed underneath it. And, on Christmas morning, the family would once again join around the tree waiting for the festivities to begin. The scent, aroma, and the Real tree itself were an integral part of the family unity as well as the holiday season itself. This tradition continues to this day as more than 37 million families celebrate with a Real Christmas tree.

The celebrating of Christmas with a Real tree has been a tradition for over 400 years. At one time, all Christmas trees were cut from natural stands (or straight out of the forest). As you can imagine, these wild trees looked nothing like today’s professionally grown and sheared trees. Today, 98% of trees are grown on plantations. These plantations may sell them to local lots, or act as choose and cut farms where people go to select and cut down their own fresh tree.

To make your tradition a more memorable and pleasant one, we’d like to offer a few helpful hints when selecting a tree:

Do a freshness test.(This will not be needed if you are cutting the tree yourself as you know it is fresh.) Gently grasp a branch between your thumb and forefinger and pull it toward you. Very few needles should come off in your hand if the tree is fresh. Shake or bounce the tree on its stump. You should not see an excessive amount of green needles fall to the ground. Some loss of interior brown needles is normal and will occur over the lifetime of the tree.

Once you’ve chosen your tree, keep it in a sheltered, unheated area such as a porch or garage to protect it from the wind and sun until you are ready to set it up and decorate it.

Before you set up your tree, make a fresh, straight cut across the base of the trunk (about a quarter inch up from the original cut) and place the tree in a tree stand that holds a gallon or water or more.

Warning:Keep the tree stand filled with water. A seal of dried sap will form over the cut stump in four to six hours if the water drops below the base of the tree, preventing the tree from absorbing water later when the tree stand is refilled. If a seal does form, another fresh cut will need to be made.

Water the tree: A tree will absorb as much as a gallon of water or more in the first 24 hours and one or more quarts a day thereafter. Water is important because it prevents the needles from drying and dropping off and the boughs from drooping. Water also keeps the tree fragrant. Water prevents the tree from drying out and loosing color.

Other Do’s and Don’ts: In addition, keep your tree away from heat and draft sources like fireplaces, radiators and television sets. Test your light cords and connections before hanging them on the tree to make sure they’re in good working order. You don’t want to use cords with cracked insulation or broken or empty sockets. Also be sure to unplug the lights before you go to bed or leave the house. Never overload electrical circuits.

Sensible precautions such as these will help preserve the unique beauty and tradition that only a Real Christmas tree can provide.
